What is DSL?

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. Using ADSL2+ technology from Zhone Technologies and High-Speed Voice & Data Link technology from Charles Industries, United's DSL lets you surf the net at speeds up to 15-20 times faster than a 56K modem.

What are the benefits of DSL?

DSL offers faster download and upload speeds, which will allow you to browse the internet and send and receive email in a fraction of the time it would take on a dial-up connection. Also, United's DSL is always on, so there is no dial-up time, and you can even talk on the same line while surfing.

Will I be able to talk on the phone or send a fax while on the internet?

Absolutely. All of our offered calling features, including voice mail, call forwarding, and call waiting, work with DSL. You can also send and receive faxes while you are surfing the web.

Can I connect more than one computer to DSL?

Absolutely. You can connect multiple computers to the Internet with a broadband router. United Communications currently sells the Ruckus Wireless Router for $199.00, which includes installation, support, and a two-year warranty, in addition to wireless access to surf the web with your laptop and other devices. If you need a static IP address, it is an additional $5 per month. If you have a need for multiple IP addresses, there will be a $5 fee for each additional IP address.

How do I connect all of my computers?

The easiest and safest way to connect multiple computers to our DSL connection is with a broadband router. If you need to access the internet wirelessly using a laptop or other wireless device, you will need to purchase a wireless broadband router. We offer a Ruckus Wireless Router for $199 including installation, which includes wireless access.

What is an Ethernet Port?

An Ethernet Port (also called a Network Port or a Network Card) is located on the back of your computer, and looks like a large telephone jack. The Ethernet Port allows you to hook an Ethernet cable up to your computer. An Ethernet cable is the standard cable used in networking and our high-speed DSL. In order to hook up to a DSL modem, you will need this port on your computer.

Where can I get an Ethernet Port for my computer?

Ethernet Ports, or Network Cards, are available from many vendors and computer stores. Many of these cards can be easily installed yourself, or you can contact your computer vendor. We also have both PCI and USB port Ethernet adapters available for $50.

What features are included with my DSL account?

All of our internet accounts come with a free POP3 email account and 10 MB of storage space to host a website. Additional email accounts are available for only $1/month each. Feel free to contact United if you have a need for additional email account(s).
